Pixi MatteLast Liquid Lip Review

Pixi MatteLast Liquid Lip Review

There’s something pretty sweet I’d like to share with you today. I’d like to think that I wouldn’t share anything here unless it was exciting, cool, or both; and I think this qualifies. You see for years I’ve been on a Goldilocks-esque journey to find the perfect liquid lipstick yet constantly coming up against formulas that are almost there but either too drying, too sheer, too short-lived on the lips, or too sticky. Well, with the Pixi MatteLast Liquid Lip [affiliate link / gifted] it looks like I’ve found my just right.

I may not have come across these fab matte lip colours if it wasn’t for Pixi sending me a gorgeous PR package just before Christmas. There, in amongst a veritable Smörgåsbord of rose themed skin treats, were the five current rose and neutral shades from the MatteLast collection which I have come to absolutely love.

My first impressions before I’d even swatched the lip colours were pretty positive: I like the sleek, unfussy packaging with the iconic pistachio green lid. My sore hands found the square tubes much easier to grip and open than the round tubes that liquid lipsticks most often come in too. The smell is divine, there’s a touch of the chocolate orange about it, and I got very excited when I saw the teardrop shape of the applicator as it looked like it would make defining my pretty shallow cupids bow into a breeze.

When I swatched them on my arm, I was struck by just how opaque the formula was; I took one pass at each colour and as you can see in the picture at the top, they completely covered my tattoo. Upon applying them to my lips, my initial thoughts about the shape of the applicator were confirmed. The pointed tip made getting the cupids bow just right and accurately covering the thinner corners of my top lip into a breeze. I found the rounded bit of the applicator to be perfect for the fuller part of my bottom lip too.

The formula feels light on the lips and isn’t drying, which is one of my particular issues with matte liquid lipsticks. One of the best things about these liquid lip colours though is their longevity; I won’t pretend that they lasted the whole day, but I managed to get a full 6 hours of wear (including drinking and eating) without needing any reapplication at all. When I topped up with a second coat at the 6 hour mark, it did not cause any flaking of the remainder of the original layer and it looked as good as the first application.

These shades are all within the ‘everyday neutral’ range – however there is one additional colour available in the MatteLast range which is a very bright pink colour called ‘Prettiest Pink’ [affiliate link]. I tend to be more attracted to brighter lip colours, but I’m happy to now have these beauties in my lip arsenal for daytime looks.

I’m hard pressed to pick my favourite shade as I felt that all five suited my skintone very well, but I do have a soft spot for ‘Really Rose’ and ‘Matte Beige’ in particular. I took a bad window selfie (I really need to get a phone with a better camera!!) on the days I wore each of the shades to give you an idea of how they look when worn (above).

The Pixi MatteLast Liquid Lip retails at £16 each and although they cost more than I like to spend on a lip colour, overall I’m converted. I love this formula and I’m perfectly happy to have to reapply once over the course of the day to reap the other benefits of the product. My lips don’t dry out, the formula doesn’t flake, dries down within a couple of minutes, smells lovely and the colour is very opaque. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that they bring out a bright red Pixi MatteLast before my wedding this summer!
